 What is Merv Rating?

Furnace filters range in several levels of quality. Some filters are disposable while other are reusable. There’s a system set to help you find the right filter. The MERV rating system. MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) uses a scale numbered 1-16 to rate furnace filters. Higher rating equals better performance.

 Ratings

Rating: 1 – 4

Filters rated 1 – 4 are the bottom of the barrel, these include your disposable filters. They do a decent job keeping out insects and rocks but lack the power to block out air born particles. They are low in cost and can be replaced as often as twice a month. Avoid getting these filters unless you want the bare minimum.

Rating: 5 – 8

Ratings 1 – 5 consist of filters that are pleated to allow larger surface area to absorb more content. These are well balanced options that are priced fair and are quality-made. Great for keeping equipment clean.

Rating: 9-12

Filters rated this high in the MERV system are expensive because they perform amazingly. These filters are wider, bigger and have twice the number of pleats. so, if you’re looking to protect your family from air born allergens then consider these filters.

Rating: 13-16

Ratings 13 – 16. Finally, we have reach peaked performance. HVAC units require filters with high MERV ratings to perform their function properly. HEPA furnaces provide hospital graded air cleanliness. HEPA furnaces require professional installation and can be costly. It’s a small price to pay if you want the best in the industry.
